Observation Narrative
Shrubland occupying windswept, northeast-facing, sloping metabasalt face. A few severely stunted red oaks and mountain ash are present. Shrubs occupy about 50% of the plot,, with short Aronia melanocarpa and taller Gaylussacia baccata co-dominating. Vegetation is rooted in well-developed organic mats covered by mosses. Conspicuous lichens on the exposed rock surfaces include Dimelaena oreina, Lasallia papulosa, Umbilicaria muehlenbergii, Fuscidea sp., Acarospora sp., Xanthoparmelia sp., Stereocaulon cf. glaucescens, and Rhizoplaca subdiscrepens.
